Obesity Petition

For public coverage of medical treatment for obesity.

For Public Coverage of Medical Treatment for Obesity

Portugal was a pioneer in Europe by recognising obesity as a disease in 2004 — but more than 20 years later, medical treatment still has no public coverage. This creates inequality in access to healthcare and harms thousands of people.

Why this petition matters

Effective recognition

Despite obesity having been recognised as a disease for over 20 years, a publicly covered medical treatment category for this condition has never been created.

Equity in treatment

Surgical treatment is already covered by the National Health Service, but remains dependent on rigid BMI and weight thresholds.

We do not treat numbers, we treat people; we do not treat weight but excess and/or dysfunctional adiposity and its harmful consequences for health. Simplistic criteria do not reflect the complexity of the disease, nor its physical, mental, mechanical, financial or metabolic implications.

Justice in healthcare

Obesity is a chronic disease, a public health problem, and deserves medical treatment free from prejudice — just like any other chronic condition. Unequal access to treatment compromises the health and dignity of thousands of people living with obesity.

This petition aims to correct that failure and promote a fairer healthcare system.

Signing this petition is a step forward for public health, evidence-based medicine and social equity.

Change begins with every signature. Together we can ensure fair and dignified access to medical treatment for obesity.
